The American actor and director Peter Horton was born on 20 August 1953 in Bellevue, Washington. When Peter was at the age of 8, he moved to Hong Kong with his parents. Since his father was in the shipping business, they had to travel a lot. His family later moved to Marin County, Calif.

For early education, Peter attended Redwood High School in Marin County, California. He then studied music theory at Principia College in Illinois. Later, Peter joined the University of California, Santa Barbara from where he earned a degree in composition.
