Susan enrolled at the Hampshire College in Massachusetts received her formal education there. Her interest in photography emerged from a very young age, but it differed from most artists.

Mikula uses tools like pinhole cameras and Polaroid cameras to try and experiment with light and time. She began finding her own style by observing the works of other artists like Julian Schnabel, Cy Twombly, Agnes Martin, and others.
